Luigi Gattinara

Luigi Gattinara has revisited the art of still life through the lens of a camera. As if by magic he is able to recreate the timeless quality found in Old Masters’ masterpieces, from the Dutch painters of the seventeenth century to Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro. His own theatre looks like the studio table where the artist arranged the very objects he wanted to reproduce on his canvas. But Luigi’s optical realism undergoes a subtle transformation under the effect of an unexpected light and graduation of colours. It creates a fascination that makes it difficult to distinguish the photographic image from the painted one. Luigi Gattinara’s immense artistic sensibility is backed by a rich and scholarly knowledge of art history. It enables him to invest this renewal of the still life genre with a greatly enjoyable artistic sense. His images are telling, they speak of the beauty of beholding as much as of the inherent beauty of the things beheld. His images are not representations of real objects, they are objects transmuted in images. For the last forty years Luigi Gattinara has exhibited in the top most prestigious art galleries in Italy and abroad (Paris, Berlin, New York, Singapore, Tokyo). He is the founder and President of the Triennale della Fotografia Italiana.
